The DPSY 8115 Course will provide students with the opportunity to practice each step of the process of creating a prospectus and receive feedback from instructors and peers on their work.

DPSY 8115 Course Description:

DPSY 8115 Course is designed to prepare students for the doctoral dissertation proposal process. It begins with an overview of research design and quantitative and qualitative methods. Students then learn about writing a prospectus for their research, including developing a hypothesis, conducting a literature review, choosing a research design, and identifying appropriate statistical analyses.

1) Introduction to the DPSY 8115 Course and overview of the requirements for a quality prospectus in psychology (including a review of the APA style guide). In this first lecture we will also discuss the importance of writing a high quality prospectus as you begin your graduate studies in psychology. You will be introduced to the expectations for DPSY 8115 Course and an overview of the grading rubric will be provided.

2) Theoretical perspective and literature review development. In this lecture we will discuss how to develop a theoretical perspective for your prospectus and how to incorporate this perspective into your literature review. We will also review some common mistakes made in literature reviews and how to avoid them.

3) Research question development and hypothesis testing. In this lecture we focus on developing research questions that are specific, testable, and answerable within the scope of your literature review. We will also discuss how to develop hypotheses based on your research questions and how to test these hypotheses using statistical methods.

4) Methodology development and data analysis plan creation. In this lecture we focus on developing a detailed methodology section for your prospectus. This will include a discussion of different research designs, data collection methods, and data analysis plans. We will also review some common mistakes made in methodology sections and how to avoid them.

5) Writing the results section of your prospectus. In this lecture we focus on writing the results section of your prospectus. This will include a discussion of different ways to present your data, how to interpret your results, and what to do if you find unexpected results. We will also review some common mistakes made in results sections and how to avoid them

DPSY 8115 Course will help students develop and write an academically rigorous proposal that meets the standards set by their department and/or dissertation committee. The DPSY 8115 Course will be taught online. Students will be expected to complete all assignments independently, except for those specifically labeled as group work. Some of the topics covered include finding a topic, developing an argument, writing literature reviews, developing research questions, choosing appropriate methodologies, writing results sections, and preparing an oral defense.

This assessment is based on students submitting a draft prospectus, which will be graded according to the criteria below. Each criterion will be graded according to the following scale:

0 = No evidence/none of the above (no effort) 1 = Poor 2 = Adequate 3 = Good 4 = Very good 5 = Excellent

Students must achieve an average of 3 or higher for each criterion to pass this assessment and receive a Pass grade for this unit. Students who do not pass this assessment will receive a Fail grade for this unit.

DPSY 8115 is an online DPSY 8115 Course that is designed to help you develop the skills necessary to write a quality prospectus for your doctoral dissertation. The DPSY 8115 Course will provide you with an overview of the elements of a prospectus and will guide you through the process of developing your own prospectus. You will have the opportunity to receive feedback on your prospectus from your instructor and fellow students.

Upon successful completion of DPSY 8115 Course, you will be able to:

DPSY 8115 is a research design DPSY 8115 Course that helps students develop a high quality research prospectus. Students learn to identify and clearly articulate an area of interest, to select and review existing scholarly literature, to formulate an appropriate research question, and to develop a solid research methodology. Students also receive guidance on developing the critical components of a high quality prospectus including: specific aims, hypotheses, rationale, summary of relevant literature, study design, proposed analyses (including power analysis), data management plans, and implications for future research. Students are expected to have completed most required DPSY 8115 Courses prior to enrolling in this class. This class will also serve as preparation for students’ doctoral comprehensive examinations.

DPSY 8115 Course Delivery Modes for DPSY 8116 – Research Methods Seminar I (3 credits) (DPSY 8116)

Fall 2020: Online

In this semester-long seminar series, students explore current topics in psychological research methods through readings and discussions. Emphasis is placed on applying various research methods to various psychological phenomena in order to clarify issues such as what we can learn from experiments vs. correlational studies; the merits of qualitative vs. quantitative methods; generalizability across time and space; the role of theory in generating hypotheses and designing studies; the implications of methodological choices for theory testing; and many others. Class discussion is structured so that students gain practice integrating multiple perspectives into their thinking about research methods (e.g., psychological theories, philosophical approaches to knowledge building). DPSY 8115 Course delivery modes will be asynchronous online learning with weekly student presentations over Zoom meetings as well as synchronous discussion sessions every other week via Zoom meetings. Students are expected to participate actively in these discussions. The first half of the DPSY 8115 Course focuses on experimental designs while the second half focuses on non-experimental designs (e.g., surveys), but there is no strict division between experimental and non-experimental designs because experimental designs are sometimes used within non-experimental designs (e.g., randomized controlled trials) while non-experimental designs are sometimes used within experimental designs (e.g., pre/post surveys). Major assignments include reading responses each week over Blackboard Learn as well as two major papers over the semester: 1) an essay evaluating a published paper’s methodological strengths/weaknesses and 2) a scientific proposal for an original study or review paper utilizing one or more specific research method(s). The proposal includes at least three sections: 1) review of existing scientific literature; 2) description of proposed study/review methodology; 3) evaluation of potential methodological limitations with regard to construct validity, internal validity, external validity, ecological validity, etc.. Prior completion of all required DPSY 8115 Courses except for doctoral comprehensive examinations is strongly recommended before taking this class because it assumes some level of familiarity with most major types of statistical analyses typically used in psychological science research studies (i.e., ANOVA/MANOVA/ANCOVA/MANCOVA/Hierarchical Linear Modeling/Structural Equation Modeling). We may cover several other types of statistical analyses during this class but it will likely be impossible to thoroughly cover all possible statistical analyses during this single semester given the broad scope of this class’s focus on all things related to psychological science research methods so students are strongly encouraged not only to be familiar with major types statistical analyses but also with basic concepts associated with hypothesis testing such as population parameter vs statistic sampling distributions vs histograms Type I error rates vs Type II error rates false positives vs false negatives statistical significance levels effect sizes Type I power levels Type II power levels alpha levels beta levels p values etc… All students should already have become familiar with these concepts when taking prior classes such as introductory statistics classes or basic statistics classes so there will not be much time devoted specifically to re-explaining these concepts during this seminar series because that would require compromising coverage on other topics discussed during this seminar series so if you do not feel comfortable with these concepts you may want consider taking a refresher statistics class prior taking DPSY 8116 which you can take online through George Mason University or elsewhere before starting your first semester at George Mason University’s PhD program in Clinical Psychology unless you have already taken a basic or intermediate statistics class within the past two years since starting your PhD program at George Mason University’s PhD Program in Clinical Psychology which would likely eliminate your need for taking a refresher statistics class since most schools require similar types DPSY 8115 Courses…but if you do decide take such a refresher There are three assessments for DPSY 8115 Course: two small-group presentations and one individual paper. The purpose of the assessments is to provide you with opportunities to apply what you have learned in DPSY 8115 Course to a real-world context. Assessment Description

Students will work in groups of 2-3 (at the discretion of the instructor) to develop a detailed research proposal for a mock research study. The proposal should be written in APA format and should include all of the required sections as outlined in Chapter 4 (pp. 59-69) of The Craft of Research. These sections include: Introduction, Review of Literature, Method, Analysis Plan, Implications/Limitations/Future Directions, References, Appendices (if applicable). All written work must be submitted by the end of Week 12 in order to receive full credit for this component of the assignment. In addition to the written component, each student will present his or her research proposal to the class during Week 12. It is expected that students will use PowerPoint slides (or some other type of visual aid) to supplement their oral presentations. The presentations should be approximately 15 minutes in length (not including questions). A detailed grading rubric for this component is provided below. All oral presentations must be submitted by the end of Week 12 in order to receive full credit for this component of the assignment.
