2 of the six writing assignments will be individual papers written by each student. The other four will be groups of 2-4 students who will write a single paper for that particular assignment. The textbook provides the following definition for conflict: “Conflict is a process that begins when one party perceives that its interests are being opposed or threatened by another party” (p. 4). My personal definition of conflict would be similar, but I would also add that conflict can be internal as well as external. I do think there are different types of conflict, and the textbook identifies four main types: intrapersonal, interpersonal, intergroup, and international (p. 4).
2. How might an individual’s personality type contribute to the experience of conflict? Do you think that some personality types are more likely to experience or perpetuate conflict than others? Why or why not?
Each individual’s personality type will likely contribute to their experience of conflict in different ways. For example, someone who is naturally shy and introverted may have more difficulty expressing their needs and wants in a way that doesn’t come across as confrontational. On the other hand, someone who is extroverted and outspoken may find it easier to assert themselves in a way that could potentially escalate the conflict. I do think that some personality types are more likely to experience or perpetuate conflict than others, but it really depends on the specific situation and other factors involved.
3. What do you think are some of the main causes of interpersonal conflict? Do you think that these same causes can contribute to intergroup or international conflict? Why or why not?
Some of the main causes of interpersonal conflict include differences in values, beliefs, and opinions; communication difficulties; and power imbalances. I do think that these same causes can contribute to intergroup or international conflict, but there may be other factors involved as well. For example, cultural differences can play a role in intergroup conflict, and economic interests can be a major factor in international disputes.
4. How do you think gender affects the experience of conflict? Do you think that men and women tend to handle conflict differently? If so, why do you think this is the case?
Gender can affect the experience of conflict in a number of ways. For example, research has shown that women are more likely than men to avoid confrontation and take a more passive approach to dealing with disagreements (p. 6). This is often due to socialization patterns that teach girls from a young age to be nice and accommodating, while boys are encouraged to be tough and independent. Of CRJS 6742 Course, there are always exceptions to this general trend, but it is something to consider when thinking about how gender affects the way people deal with conflict.
