CRJS 6541 Week 2 Pre-requisites
CRJS 6541 Course provides an overview of the human and ecological systems issues that are the basis for sustainable development. It introduces students to the concepts of social and ecological sustainability, resilience and governance. The CRJS 6541 Course examines how these principles are manifested in a variety of global development challenges including: climate change, food security, water security, energy security and environmental justice.
CRJS 6541 Week 2 Duration
Week 2 of the Sustainable Development for Global Communities* CRJS 6541 Course is a time for students to focus on the issues and challenges that arise when implementing environmental protection and conservation measures in developing countries. The week begins with a lecture on the difficulties of translating international environmental agreements into domestic law and policy. The lecture is followed by a case study on the obstacles to effective environmental regulation in India. In the second half of the week, students read about the problems associated with implementing environmental conservation measures in the developing world, and then discuss these issues in a seminar.

For CRJS 6541, Sustainable Development for Global Communities, you will be asked to submit a paper on a topic related to sustainable development and global communities. The purpose of this paper is to provide you with an opportunity to critically analyze and apply the concepts learned in CRJS 6541 Course to a real-world problem or issue. You will also have the opportunity to practice writing in a professional manner and using proper APA citation and formatting. The paper should be 4-5 pages in length (not including title page or reference list) and must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. (Central Time) on Sunday of Week 2.
Paper Topic:
The paper topic is to be chosen by the student in consultation with the instructor. The paper must address a real-world problem or issue related to sustainable development and global communities. Possible topics include, but are not limited to: climate change, poverty, hunger, water shortages, deforestation, species extinction, etc.
Paper Requirements:
The paper must be 4-5 pages in length (not including title page or reference list), double-spaced, and written in 12 point Times New Roman font. The paper must include a title page and reference list formatted according to APA guidelines. The body of the paper must include the following sections:
Introduction: The introduction should provide background information on the chosen topic and explain the purpose of the paper.
Analysis: The analysis section should critically analyze the chosen topic using the concepts learned in CRJS 6541 Course. This section should be supported by at least three scholarly sources in addition to the CRJS 6541 Course textbook.
Conclusion: The conclusion should summarize the main points of the paper and offer possible solutions to the problem or issue being addressed.

A key component of sustainability is community involvement and engagement, which can take many forms, including surveys/questionnaires, public meetings/workshops, focus groups, interviews, social media campaigns/outreach efforts, stakeholder analysis/mapping exercises, community-based research projects, asset mapping exercises, participatory action research (PAR), service learning opportunities with local organizations/institutions engaged in sustainability initiatives/projects within a given community or region (Raval & Shaikh, 2015). Sustainable development is a term that has been defined in many ways, but there are some core concepts that are common to most definitions. To me, sustainable development means meeting the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In other words, it is about finding a balance between environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. Some examples of sustainable development include renewable energy, green buildings, sustainable agriculture, and clean transportation.
Question 2: The Brundtland Commission defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987). Do you agree with this definition? Why or why not?
I agree with this definition for the most part. I think it accurately captures the idea that sustainable development is about finding a balance between meeting the needs of current generations and protecting the environment for future generations. However, I would add that sustainable development also includes a focus on social equity. For example, it is not enough to simply meet the needs of current generations if doing so comes at the expense of marginalized groups who do not have access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.
Question 3: What are some of the major challenges associated with sustainable development?
There are many challenges associated with sustainable development, but I would say that some of the most significant challenges include climate change, poverty, and inequality. Climate change is a major challenge because it threatens the planet’s ability to support life as we know it. Poverty is a major challenge because it limits people’s ability to lead healthy and productive lives. Inequality is a major challenge because it creates social tensions and can lead to conflict.
Question 4: What are some of the benefits of sustainable development?
There are many benefits to sustainable development, but I would say that some of the most significant benefits include improved human health, increased economic opportunities, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Improved human health is a benefit because sustainable development practices can help reduce exposure to harmful pollutants. Increased economic opportunities is a benefit because sustainability often goes hand-in-hand with innovation and entrepreneurship. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions is a benefit because it helps mitigate climate change.

+CRJS 6541 Course Description: CRJS 6541 Course builds on the premise that sustainable development is a basic human right and addresses how digital media can help secure and advance that right, with special attention to global communities in developing countries. Students will learn how digital media can promote inclusion, diversity, democracy, peace building and social justice; they will develop skills in media production (including photography, video production and online editing), cultural analysis, design thinking and ethnography; they will also study critical perspectives on sustainability science and policy. The CRJS 6541 Course is organized around three modules—1) the theoretical basis for understanding the potential impact of digital media on sustainable development; 2) an overview of international sustainability science and policy; 3) various ways that digital media can be used to support sustainable development. We examine historical contexts, case studies from around the world, research methods including qualitative interviewing techniques such as participatory action research (PAR), as well as best practices that are emerging today in local communities.

CRJS 6541 Week 8: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked goals designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The broad goals are interrelated though each has its own targets to achieve. The total number of targets is 169. The SDGs cover a broad range of social and economic development issues. They are designed to address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice.
The SDGs were adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. The 2030 Agenda is a plan of action for people, planet and prosperity. Sustainable development is defined as development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It contains within it two key concepts:
The concept of “needs”, in particular, the essential needs of the world’s poor, to which overriding priority should be given; and
The idea of limitations imposed by the state of technology and social organization on the environment’s ability to meet present and future needs.”
The Brundtland Commission’s definition of sustainable development popularized the term, but it is not universally accepted as an accurate portrayal of sustainable development. Sustainability is important because it helps reduce pollution and conserve natural resources while also creating economic benefits for individuals, organizations, communities and nations around the world by providing green jobs and other opportunities in environmentally friendly industries such as renewable energy production or recycling companies that help reduce pollution and conserve natural resources thus helping create a healthier planet for us all to live on for many generations into the future if we can continue investing in sustainable development practices around world now . For example , developing more bike paths , investing in solar energy , wind energy , hydro power plants , tidal wave energy production , geothermal energy production , clean coal technologies , nuclear fission power plants , nuclear fusion power plants , investing more in recycling programs etc can help make a difference as well as changing some personal habits like conserving water usage at home by turning off faucets when brushing teeth , taking shorter showers etc . Water scarcity might impact different stakeholder groups differently because some stakeholders might have access to fresh water while others might not which could cause conflict between those who have access to fresh water over those who don’t because if they are competing against each other for scarce resources then tensions are likely going rise leading potential violence which is something we have seen happen before between countries who share common rivers where one nation or group might build dams on shared rivers depriving people living down river from access which has caused tensions among various countries sharing common rivers around world . Also different stakeholders might have different opinions on how best respond or adapt water scarcity issues which could also cause conflict between various stakeholder groups . Also stakeholders could try form alliances where parties agree cooperate certain project but retain independence otherwise which can provide some measure protection against aggression from outside forces . I think both approaches mentioned above are effective ways stakeholders can work together but I believe partnership approach would be most effective because it gives everyone equal say decision making process instead having one group make decisions that everyone else has deal with even if they don’t agree with them . Also forming partnerships between various stakeholder groups allows various parties share information ideas about how best respond adapt water scarcity issues so everyone gets chance learn from others experience gain new perspective issue at hand instead just having narrow view things only concerned about own interests without any regard what others doing trying achieve same goal responding adapting changing environment around them which could lead conflicts breaking out among various stakeholder groups trying find resolution problem before situation gets worse than it already is .
