Sustainable development is a term that has been defined in many ways, but there are some core concepts that are common to most definitions. To me, sustainable development means meeting the needs of current generations without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. In other words, it is about finding a balance between environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. Some examples of sustainable development include renewable energy, green buildings, sustainable agriculture, and clean transportation.

Question 2: The Brundtland Commission defined sustainable development as “development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” (WCED, 1987). Do you agree with this definition? Why or why not?

I agree with this definition for the most part. I think it accurately captures the idea that sustainable development is about finding a balance between meeting the needs of current generations and protecting the environment for future generations. However, I would add that sustainable development also includes a focus on social equity. For example, it is not enough to simply meet the needs of current generations if doing so comes at the expense of marginalized groups who do not have access to basic necessities like food, water, and shelter.

Question 3: What are some of the major challenges associated with sustainable development?

There are many challenges associated with sustainable development, but I would say that some of the most significant challenges include climate change, poverty, and inequality. Climate change is a major challenge because it threatens the planet’s ability to support life as we know it. Poverty is a major challenge because it limits people’s ability to lead healthy and productive lives. Inequality is a major challenge because it creates social tensions and can lead to conflict.

Question 4: What are some of the benefits of sustainable development?

There are many benefits to sustainable development, but I would say that some of the most significant benefits include improved human health, increased economic opportunities, and reduced greenhouse gas emissions. Improved human health is a benefit because sustainable development practices can help reduce exposure to harmful pollutants. Increased economic opportunities is a benefit because sustainability often goes hand-in-hand with innovation and entrepreneurship. Reduced greenhouse gas emissions is a benefit because it helps mitigate climate change.

CRJS 6541: Sustainable Development for Global Communities* CRJS 6541 Course focuses on how principles of sustainability, social justice and human rights can be integrated into global development initiatives to promote economic growth and equitable access to basic human needs. Students will examine the complex relationships between environment and development, including the politics of international environmental protection. They will learn about the role of international organizations, NGOs and global corporations in fostering sustainable development practices. +CRJS 6541 Course Description: CRJS 6541 Course builds on the premise that sustainable development is a basic human right and addresses how digital media can help secure and advance that right, with special attention to global communities in developing countries. Students will learn how digital media can promote inclusion, diversity, democracy, peace building and social justice; they will develop skills in media production (including photography, video production and online editing), cultural analysis, design thinking and ethnography; they will also study critical perspectives on sustainability science and policy. The CRJS 6541 Course is organized around three modules—1) the theoretical basis for understanding the potential impact of digital media on sustainable development; 2) an overview of international sustainability science and policy; 3) various ways that digital media can be used to support sustainable development. We examine historical contexts, case studies from around the world, research methods including qualitative interviewing techniques such as participatory action research (PAR), as well as best practices that are emerging today in local communities.

CRJS 6541 Week 8: The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) or Global Goals are a collection of 17 interlinked goals designed to be a “blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all”. The broad goals are interrelated though each has its own targets to achieve. The total number of targets is 169. The SDGs cover a broad range of social and economic development issues. They are designed to address the global challenges we face, including those related to poverty, inequality, climate, environmental degradation, prosperity, peace and justice.

Water scarcity might impact different stakeholder groups differently because some stakeholders might have access to fresh water while others might not which could cause conflict between those who have access to fresh water over those who don’t because if they are competing against each other for scarce resources then tensions are likely going rise leading potential violence which is something we have seen happen before between countries who share common rivers where one nation or group might build dams on shared rivers depriving people living down river from access which has caused tensions among various countries sharing common rivers around world . Also different stakeholders might have different opinions on how best respond or adapt water scarcity issues which could also cause conflict between various stakeholder groups . One way stakeholders could work together or collaborate with each other so they can best respond or adapt water scarcity issues is by forming partnerships where they share information with each other exchange ideas on how best respond or adapt water scarcity issues so everyone has say on what actions take place instead having just one group making decisions that everyone else has live with which could create resentment among those who didn’t get chance participate decision making process . Developing a sustainable community requires careful planning for long term success that includes consideration of key factors such as food security, energy needs, water supply and wastewater treatment issues, transportation infrastructure requirements and environmental concerns such as land use patterns, air quality and pollution control efforts and waste management strategies (Cunningham & Cunningham, 2015). We have discussed many of these elements throughout CRJS 6541 Course but had not really looked at them as a whole until now. With all these factors to consider in developing a sustainable community can any one element ever really be considered independently without considering its impact on others? Is transportation planning only about moving people and goods efficiently or must it consider other factors such as air quality and pollution control efforts when considering options such as mass transit versus personal vehicles or even bicycle usage versus walking? 4) A recent article in Scientific American: The Water Challenge explores some of the critical issues facing our world related to water supply today and projected demands in the future (Hayden et al., 2014). The article begins by stating that “Water has shaped civilization since its beginning” (Hayden et al., 2014, p. 37). This seems like a strong statement given that there are so many factors that shape civilization such as climate change or political influence but what evidence does the author provide supporting this statement? Do you agree with this statement based on what you have read in this article or from other sources related to water availability issues worldwide? Why or why not? Are there any specific examples cited in the article that support the claim regarding water shaping civilization or do some examples actually contradict it? 5) The article goes on to discuss some facts regarding water usage by different countries worldwide which helps put into perspective both our reliance on water resources and how often we take these resources for granted (Hayden et al., 2014). Do any of these facts surprise you? Do they make you think more carefully about your own personal daily water usage practices at home, work or school including activities such as bathing, brushing your teeth, flushing toilets after using them etc.? 6) In addition to discussing current water availability issues worldwide, The Water Challenge also looks ahead at projected trends related to population growth which is expected increase demand significantly over time (Hayden et al., 2014). What is most surprising about these projections for increased demand given current available supplies worldwide compared with estimated future needs based on projected growth trends? Can anything be done now during periods of abundance that would help ensure adequate supplies during periods when shortages might occur due to drought conditions such as desalination projects for example which could turn ocean saltwater into fresh drinking water during times when freshwater sources are scarce either due to drought conditions or overuse by people working outside typical agricultural cycles (by turning reservoirs over after winter’s snowmelt has been used up)? 7) There are several additional strategies outlined at various points throughout The Water Challenge article aimed at reducing both current consumption levels while also preparing us better for anticipated future demands based on projected increases in population growth worldwide including efforts aimed at conserving existing supplies through greater efficiencies across many sectors including agriculture where irrigation represents 70 percent of global freshwater consumption according to estimates cited in the article (Hayden et al., 2014). Which strategy makes most sense given current situation faced by countries around the world regarding lack of access by millions who don’t have safe drinking water available today let alone enough clean freshwater available for all basic needs such as hygiene plus adequate amounts left over for growing crops during times when drought conditions exist due rainfall shortages resulting from climate change impacts on weather patterns etc.? 8) The Strategy section also includes information about improvements being made across many sectors including industry where reuse continues growing through recycling processes but is still far below levels needed for long term sustainability according to estimates cited by Hayden et al. (2014). Given current advances being made across many sectors along with suggested areas where more focus may be needed based on emerging threats associated with climate change etc., do you believe we can adequately address future demand challenges related fresh water availability which must account for human needs along with adequate quantities required by growing food crops etc.? 9) One item cited several times throughout The Water Challenge was technology advances being made across many sectors designed improve efficiencies thereby helping reduce overall demand requirements while also increasing production capabilities thereby allowing countries around world become more self sufficient rather than relying heavily on imports especially during times when shortages exist locally due droughts caused climate change impacts resulting decreased rainfall Patterns etc.. Have we really reached point where technology advances can solve our problems related fresh water availability well into future despite projected increases demand related population growth coupled with continued reliance fossil fuels especially oil despite recognition need move away renewable energy sources eventually perhaps sooner than later depending political clout held coal mining industry particularly United States specifically those states heavily invested coal mining operations jobs created thereby along with overall economic benefits associated continued use coal mines versus move toward cleaner forms energy especially solar power windmill technologies choices being favored more heavily China Germany etc.? 10) Obviously technology alone cannot solve our long term sustainability problems related fresh water availability according federal environmental protection agency guidelines currently require additional review before companies can begin operations involving disposal materials containing certain chemicals used treat drinking pollution including some combinations chemicals previously approved individually therefore faster approval process now being sought expedite treatment facilities construction especially smaller communities without access adequate sewage treatment systems due distance larger cities where similar facilities already exist able accept increase load generated smaller rural communities located within range smaller cities able accept increased load generated within their service areas larger city systems however costs associated new connections setup along existing infrastructure lines between smaller rural towns larger urban centers difficult justify given limited revenue source required fund capital costs associated infrastructure development particularly low income residents generally live small rural towns located outside urban service areas unable pay higher monthly fees charged connect actual service areas served larger cities therefore unable enjoy same levels access services provided residents living within served areas generally speaking making connections between smaller rural towns larger cities expensive requiring large upfront investment running maintenance costs ongoing basis although once initial investment paid connection setup completed ongoing maintenance costs typically quite low based experience residents served European countries similar demographics structures compared United States therefore making connections between smaller urban centers easier justify due economies scale although initial investment running costs typically much lower per person making connection feasible option families willing pay monthly fee connect system allowing them enjoy same level access municipal services provided those living within urban service areas served larger city systems likewise connected nearby town able afford initial investment capital running costs continuing connection however remote location often makes getting approval connect difficult justify due potential high loss rates system users paying monthly fee connect underdeveloped remote location disconnected nearby city system unable provide same level services customers living within urbanized served area 11) Another item covered extensively throughout The Water Challenge was issue distributional equity relevance addressing fairness considerations associated providing public services including access clean freshwater supplies disadvantaged groups members society particular those people living poverty
