My name is ____________ and I am a student in the Criminal Justice Administration program at Colorado State University – Global Campus. For my capstone project, I would like to propose a research project on the topic of organizational management and leadership within the criminal justice system.
There are many different aspects of organizational management and leadership that could be explored in this project. Some possible research questions that could be addressed include:
1. What are the most effective methods for managing and leading criminal justice organizations?
2. What are the most common challenges that criminal justice leaders face when trying to implement change within their organizations?
3. How can criminal justice leaders better motivate and engage their employees?
4. What are the best practices for building effective teams within criminal justice organizations?
5. How can criminal justice organizations better manage conflict and promote cooperation among employees?
This project could take many different forms, depending on the specific research questions that are chosen to focus on. Some possible methods of data collection that could be used include interviews with criminal justice leaders, surveys of employees within criminal justice organizations, or case studies of successful (or unsuccessful) organizational changes within the criminal justice system.
I believe that this project would be beneficial not only to myself as a student, but also to practitioners working within the criminal justice system. By exploring the various challenges and best practices related to organizational management and leadership, this project has the potential to provide valuable insights that could help improve the effectiveness of criminal justice organizations.

## Part One – Theory (30 points) ##
Please answer each of the following questions thoroughly. Use complete sentences, and cite any resources you used in preparing your responses whenever appropriate. Write your answers below each question (indent slightly). Use additional sheets if necessary.
1) Define “leader” and “leadership,” and explain how these two concepts are related to one another (5 points).
A leader is defined as an individual who guides or motivates a group of people towards a common goal. Leadership is defined as the process of motivating, guiding, and directing people towards a common goal or purpose (Yukl 2010). Leaders use various methods to influence followers, such as providing direction, setting an example, or using emotional appeal (Yukl 2010). The relationship between leaders and leadership is that leaders use leadership skills to influence followers towards a common goal or purpose.
2) What are some of the most important qualities for effective leadership? Why are these qualities important? (5 points)
Some important qualities for effective leadership are empathy, intelligence, integrity, and self-confidence. Empathy is important because it allows leaders to understand and relate to their followers’ experiences and feelings (Yukl 2010). Intelligence is important because it allows leaders to make sound decisions quickly and effectively (Yukl 2010). Integrity is important because it allows leaders to be honest and trustworthy, which builds trust between the leader and followers (Yukl 2010). Self-confidence is important because it allows leaders to remain calm under pressure and exude an air of authority (Yukl 2010).
3) Explain how “situational leadership theory” can be used by law enforcement supervisors when dealing with subordinates who exhibit different levels of maturity (10 points).
Situational leadership theory posits that there is no single leadership style that is effective in all situations; instead, effective leaders adapt their style based on the maturity level of their subordinates (Hersey & Blanchard 1988). For example, when dealing with subordinates who exhibit low levels of maturity, supervisors would use a more directive style of leadership in order to provide clear expectations and rules for behavior. When dealing with subordinates who exhibit high levels of maturity, supervisors would use a more supportive style of leadership in order to allow subordinates more autonomy in decision making.
4) What are some strategies that law enforcement agencies can use to encourage creativity among employees? How might these strategies help solve some of the problems facing law enforcement agencies today? (10 points)
Some strategies that law enforcement agencies can use to encourage creativity among employees are brainstorming sessions, encouraging risk taking, and providing resources for employee development. Brainstorming sessions can help generate new ideas from employees by allowing them to share their thoughts and ideas openly without judgement. Encouraging risk taking can help employees feel more comfortable exploring new ideas or methods without fear of failure. Providing resources for employee development can help employees gain new skills or knowledge that they can apply towards solving problems within the agency.
## Part Two – Application (70 points) ##
Please answer each of the following questions thoroughly. Use complete sentences, cite any resources you used in preparing your responses whenever appropriate, show all work/calculations clearly whenever appropriate, be concise but complete whenever possible, explain your reasoning whenever appropriate/possible, etc.. Write your answers below each question (indent slightly), showing all work/calculations where appropriate/necessary – do not attach separate sheets unless absolutely necessary – place them below/after your written answer where appropriate/necessary instead . You may use extra sheets if necessary but try not to go overboard unless absolutely necessary – remember brevity = clarity! = good!
(Note: For application questions requiring calculations please round values appropriately when presenting final answers.)
(Note: For application questions requiring written explanations please be thorough but concise.)
1) Suppose you were approached by an organization interested in improving its hiring practices related to applicant screening through psychological testing so they could better identify applicants likely to excel during academy training as well as those likely successfully perform once hired on patrol assignment – what advice would you give them regarding selection tests they should consider utilizing as part of their hiring process? And why would you recommend these particular tests over others? Be sure address both validity & reliability issues related your recommendations! (20 points)
The first step in identifying which selection tests should be utilized as part of an organization’s hiring process is to identify the specific job-related tasks and behaviors that are essential for success on the job (Schmidt & Hunter 1998). Once these job-related tasks and behaviors have been identified, selection tests that measure these constructs can be identified and utilized as part of the hiring process. For example, if an organization wants to improve its hiring practices related to identifying applicants likely successfully perform once hired on patrol assignment, selection tests measuring constructs such as aggression control or stress tolerance could be utilized as part of the hiring process. These particular selection tests would be recommended over others because they have been shown to be valid predictors of job performance for positions similar to patrol officer (Schmidt & Hunter 1998). In addition, these selection tests also have good reliability scores, which means they produce consistent results over time (Schmidt & Hunter 1998).
2) In recent years police departments across America have increasingly come under scrutiny regarding their recruitment & hiring practices related specifically racial bias – both intentional & unintentional – against minority applicants relative departmental demographics – suppose you were asked by your city’s chief brass what recommendations you might offer them regarding ways they could reduce racial bias related recruitment & hiring while still ensuring only qualified applicants are hired – what recommendations might you offer them? And why? (15 points)
There are several recommendations that could be offered in order reduce racial bias related recruitment & hiring while still ensuring only qualified applicants are hired. One recommendation would be conducting blind resume reviews wherein individuals reviewing resumes do not know the race/ethnicity of applicants until after they have made their recommendations for further consideration (Saperstein et al., 2015). Another recommendation would be utilizing structured interview protocols wherein interviewers ask all applicants the same questions in order evaluate job-related skills/abilities rather than relying on unstructured interviews wherein interviewers may ask different questions or place different emphasis on certain answers based on their personal biases (Saperstein et al., 2015). Finally, another recommendation would be implementing pre-employment polygraph examinations wherein applicants must truthfully answer questions about their criminal history or prior drug use in order move forward in the hiring process; this step would help ensure that only qualified applicants are hired while also reducing racial bias since individuals with clean criminal histories or no prior drug use would not be discriminated against based on their race/ethnicity (Saperstein et al., 2015).
3) As we’ve discussed previously organizational climate generally refers attitudes & beliefs held by members regarding organizational effectiveness while organizational culture generally refers values shared throughout organization – suppose senior management within your agency was concerned about potential negative impact low morale might have on both officer productivity & public perceptions departmental professionalism – what specific actions might they take proactively address these concerns? And why? [Hint: Look back chapter 7] [Hint: Think “climate”!] [Hint: Think “culture”!] [Hint: Think “communication”!] [Hint: Think “supervision”!] [Hint: Think “training”!] [Hint: Think “rewards”!] [Hint: Think “discipline”!] [Hint: Think “promotions”!] [Hint: Think “termination”!] [Hint: Think “recruitment”!] [(25 points)] {Note: Don’t just list actions – explain why actions recommended} {Note #2 : Examples given} {Note #3 : Examples given} {Note #4 : Examples given} {Note #5 : Examples given} {Note #6 : Examples given} {Note #7 : Examples given} {Note #8 : Examples given} {Note #9 : Examples given} {Note #10 : Examples given} {Note #11 : Examples given} {Note #12 : Examples given } ]; ;]{x]x]{x]x]{x]x]{x]x]{x]x]{x]x[}{}{}{}{}{}{}{};];];];];];];];]};;;][][][][][}}}}}}}}}}}]};;;};;};}}}}}}};}}}}}}}}}}}}};;}}};;;};nThere are several actions senior management within an agency could take proactively address concerns about potential negative impact low morale might have on both officer productivity public perceptions departmental professionalism.”);});test(“Test name”,function(){ok(true,”this test should always pass”);});test(“Test name”,function(){ok(false,”this test should always fail”);});sap.ui

CRJS 6420 Week 3 Assessment & Grading
Instructions: This assessment is designed to test your knowledge of the concepts covered in CRJS 6420 Course. You are required to answer each question below by selecting the best possible answer. Please be as specific as possible when explaining your answers and include references when needed.
Question 1:
Organizational structures can vary greatly between agencies; however, there are several types of common structures that are often used. Choose one of the following types of organizational structures and discuss how it is used within a criminal justice agency:
a) line structure
b) line-and-staff structure
c) functional structure
d) divisional structure
e) matrix structure
My chosen organizational structure is line-and-staff structure.
A line-and-staff organization is a type of organizational structure in which there is a clear hierarchy, with each level of the organization having a specific area of responsibility. The line refers to the chain of command, while the staff refers to the support personnel who advise and assist the line personnel. The line personnel are responsible for carrying out the day-to-day operations of the organization, while the staff personnel provide advice and assistance to them.
One advantage of this type of organizational structure is that it provides a clear chain of command, which can help to ensure that tasks are completed efficiently and effectively. Another advantage is that it allows for specialization, as staff personnel can be assigned to specific tasks or areas of expertise.
One disadvantage of this type of organizational structure is that it can lead to conflict between line and staff personnel, as each group may have different goals and objectives. Another disadvantage is that it can be inflexible, as changes in the organization may require changes in the structure itself.

CRJS 6420 Week 5 Discussion 2 (20 Questions)
In this discussion, you will discuss the way that leadership practices and principles affect operations within an organization. For example, a leader may direct an employee to complete a task in a certain way, which may be different from how the employee would have completed it. The leader’s decision may result in an increase or decrease in productivity for the employee or the organization as a whole.
In your initial post, address the following:
1. Define organizational leadership and explain how it differs from management. (You may use your textbook, CRJS 6420 Course materials, and/or outside resources to help you with your response.)
2. Identify at least two of the main types of leadership styles and provide an example of each. (You may use your textbook, CRJS 6420 Course materials, and/or outside resources to help you with your response.)
3. Explain how effective leadership can positively or negatively affect organizational operations. Provide a specific example to support your explanation. (You may use your textbook, CRJS 6420 Course materials, and/or outside resources to help you with your response.)
Organizational leadership is the process of directing and coordinating people and resources within an organization to achieve its goals. It differs from management in that leadership is more focused on vision and inspiration, while management is more focused on planning and execution.
There are many different types of leadership styles, but some of the most common are autocratic, democratic, and laissez-faire.
Autocratic leaders make decisions without consulting others, and typically have a very high level of control over their subordinates. An example of an autocratic leader would be a military general.
Democratic leaders consult with their subordinates before making decisions, and typically delegate tasks and give employees more freedom to do their work as they see fit. An example of a democratic leader would be a school principal.
Laissez-faire leaders take a hands-off approach and allow their subordinates to make most of the decisions. An example of a laissez-faire leader would be an art studio owner who allows their artists to work however they want as long as they meet their deadlines.
Effective leadership can positively affect organizational operations by motivating employees and improving communication. For example, if a leader is able to inspire their employees to work harder, then the organization will likely see an increase in productivity. On the other hand, if a leader is ineffective or makes poor decisions, it can negatively affect organizational operations by causing employee morale to suffer or leading to conflicts within the workplace.

CRJS 6420 Week 6 Assessment & Grading
CRJS 6420 Course Outcomes Assessed: This assignment will assess the following CRJS 6420 Course outcomes: • Develop an in-depth understanding of organizational behavior and operations. • Develop a deep and comprehensive understanding of leadership. • Apply knowledge, skills, and abilities to influence policy development and change within organizations. Purpose of Assignment The purpose of this assignment is to measure students’ ability to apply relevant concepts from both Organizational Behavior and Organizational Management in determining organizational structures, identifying leadership behaviors, assessing employee motivation, evaluating different types of power, managing conflict, analyzing communication systems, measuring team effectiveness and identifying team roles. Students will also have the opportunity to apply their knowledge by developing a plan for change. Students are required to develop a powerpoint presentation with detailed speaker notes in support of their plan for change. Students will then be asked to submit an evaluation of their fellow classmates’ presentations using Blackboard’s built-in rubric tool. Resources Required Resources Textbook for this class Materials Needed PowerPoint or other presentation software Rubric Download the Grading Rubric located on your student website under Week 6. Assignment Steps Step 1: Research your chosen organization to better understand the organization’s structure (e.g., matrix structure) and identify which level/level(s) you are targeting for this exercise (e.g., upper management). Then find two articles that discuss conflict within that organization. Read the articles carefully and take note of how conflict was addressed by the organization’s management team (i.e., managers). Step 2: Develop a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation with detailed speaker notes in which you address each part below thoroughly. Be sure to cite your sources using APA format as appropriate. Remember to follow proper PowerPoint guidelines; including headings for each major section, using bullet points when possible, as well as incorporating professional looking charts or tables when appropriate (i.e., avoid just reading from your slides!). Your presentation should include but not be limited to the following sections: Part I – Organizational Structure Define what kind of organizational structure your organization has (e.g., functional structure). Analyze how this structure influences communication within the organization as well as what type of information is shared with others (e.g., managers vs employees). Next evaluate how this structure may affect employee motivation levels (both positively & negatively), as well as analyze how this affects power dynamics within the organization? Finally, assess if this organizational structure helps or hurts team performance and why? Part II – Leadership Behavior Define what kind of leadership style(s) are employed by management at your chosen organization (e.g., directive or delegative styles). Evaluate if these leadership behaviors may contribute positively or negatively towards employee motivation levels? Would these same leadership behaviors contribute positively or negatively towards employee creativity/innovation? Why or why not? Part III – Employee Motivation In your opinion does management at your chosen organization have a clear understanding about what motivates employees? Justify your answer by providing examples from either personal experience or research you conducted during step one above? What steps could be taken by management at your chosen organization in order to improve employee motivation levels? Justify why these steps would help improve motivation levels among employees within this organization? Part IV – Power Define what kinds of power are found within the organization you researched above (e.g., referent power)? Assess if any one group has more power than another group within the same organization? If so justify why they have more power than another group within that same organization? What impact does having more power than another group have on team dynamics and performance within organizations? Finally evaluate if having more power than another group contributes positively or negatively towards employee creativity/innovation? Why or why not? Part V – Conflict Management In studying conflict management techniques identify which techniques are being used by management at your chosen company during times when conflict arises between groups or individuals within the company (e.g., forcing technique)? Does it seem like management chooses a single conflict resolution technique every time conflict arises between groups or individuals inside the company you chose (i.e., ignoring technique)? If so can you provide specific examples from either personal experience or research conducted during step one above explaining why they choose that particular technique every time there is some type of conflict within their company/organization? On average how effective do you think these techniques are in resolving conflicts between groups or individuals inside companies/organizations such as yours (i.e., compromising technique)? Why do you think they are effective –or ineffective– in resolving conflicts occurring between groups and individuals inside companies/organizations such as yours? Can you provide specific examples from either personal experience or research conducted during step one above explaining why they tend to be effective –or ineffective– when it comes to resolving conflicts inside companies such as yours that use them regularly when conflicts arise between groups and individuals inside those companies/organizations often enough over time so they know whether those techniques work effectively –or don’t work effectively– over time consistently enough while attempting to resolve conflicts between groups and individuals inside companies such as yours on average most times over time generally speaking usually pretty much all –or almost all– times typically almost always sometimes occasionally very rarely never almost never hardly ever once in a while infrequently sporadically frequently often always Part VI – Communication System In developing a communication system for your company keep in mind that it must encourage both downward communication flowing up through subordinates who report directly into supervisors who report directly into managers who report directly into upper management who ultimately report directly into corporate executive officers who ultimately report directly into board members who ultimately make business decisions that affect everyone working inside the company on down through all departments throughout every level starting with executives on down through middle managers on down through first line supervisors all way down through entry level staff positions respectively –and upward communication flowing down from corporate board members who ultimately make business decisions that affect everyone working inside the company on down through upper management on down through managers on down through supervisors all way down through entry level staff positions respectively– both! Therefore create a model where there is two-way communication flowing freely up & down simultaneously back & forth constantly throughout every level throughout every department starting with corporate executive officers reporting up directly into corporate board members making business decisions affecting everyone working inside the company all way back down again several layers later where entry CRJS 6420 Week 6 Assignment (20 Questions)
Name: __________________________ Date: ___________________
Instructions:
This assignment is designed to provide you with an opportunity to apply the principles of organizational management and leadership learned in CRJS 6420 Course. Read the following scenario and answer each question based on your understanding of the material presented in CRJS 6420 Course. This assignment should be completed independently. If you have questions, please post them on the discussion board so that others can benefit from your question. Please also refer to the syllabus for additional guidance regarding plagiarism and academic integrity.
Organizational Scenario: The ABC Agency is a state-level organization that deals with criminal justice issues related to domestic violence and sexual assault. The agency has been around for many years and has experienced several changes in its mission, vision, values, structure, resources, goals, programs, etc. In recent years, the agency has been criticized by legislators and community members for being inefficient and ineffective at addressing these issues. The agency’s current director wants to improve the agency’s image by improving its effectiveness and efficiency while maintaining or improving its services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault. She believes that organizational change is needed and she has asked you to help her develop a plan for change. She has given you complete control over the type of change that needs to be implemented at the agency as well as how it will be done. She simply wants an effective plan for change that will improve the agency’s reputation among legislators and community members while still maintaining or improving its services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault.
Your task is to develop a plan for organizational change at the ABC Agency that meets all of these requirements (i.e., improves the agency’s reputation among legislators and community members while still maintaining or improving its services to victims of domestic violence and sexual assault). Your plan must include three specific types of organizational change (structural, managerial/supervisory, cultural) as well as specific recommendations on how these changes should be implemented within the organization (i.e., what specifically needs to be done). Each recommendation must include an explanation (i.e., why do you think this particular recommendation will help improve the organization?). Be sure to incorporate what you have learned about leadership styles into your recommendations for managerial/supervisory change (i.e., which style do you think would work best in this situation? What are some advantages/disadvantages of using that style?). You should also consider issues related to power when developing your recommendations (e.g., how will people react if they lose power within their positions in the organization?).
Your paper should include all of these components: 1) Introduction; 2) Overview of existing problem(s); 3) Plan for organizational change; 4) Conclusion; 5) References list containing two references that are relevant to your topic; 6) An APA formatted cover page with a title describing your topic; 7) A heading on each page identifying who wrote it; 8) Page numbers; 9) Double spacing; 10) 12 point Times New Roman font; 11) 1 inch margins all around; 12) In-text citations throughout where appropriate (in APA format); 13) A conclusion summarizing your main points/findings; 14) Reference list containing full citation information for all references used throughout your paper in proper APA format [see http://www2.psychology.uq.edu.au/documents/APA6th_Cribsheet_PRINTED%20VERSION_Feb11_2011(2).pdf]; 15 ) Your name identified at the top right hand corner on each page of your paper [see http://www2.psychology.uq.edu.au/documents/APA6th_Cribsheet_PRINTED%20VERSION_Feb11_2011(2).pdf].

CRJS 6420 Week 7 Discussion 1 (20 Questions)
This week’s discussion is about the various types of leadership styles and the difference between management and leadership. Read through the article below, Management vs Leadership. Then, select two leadership styles from the article (one transactional and one transformational) and discuss how you think they could be used in a criminal justice organization. Lastly, discuss how you think a leader’s personal values would impact his/her style of leadership.
Management vs Leadership
The difference between management and leadership is often confusing. Both involve planning, decision making, and organizing people and resources. And both are essential to any successful organization or business. But there is a big difference between the two: management is a process of controlling people and resources in an organization in order to achieve specific goals; while leadership is inspiring people to work together to achieve common goals. In other words, managers are concerned with efficiency and meeting deadlines; leaders are concerned with vision, inspiration, and motivation.
There are many different theories of leadership and management, but most can be classified as either transactional or transformational. Transactional leaders use rewards and punishments to motivate their followers; they emphasize compliance with rules and procedures. Transformational leaders inspire their followers to go above and beyond what is expected; they emphasize creativity, innovation, and risk-taking.
Which type of leader do you think would be more effective in a criminal justice organization? Why? How do you think a leader’s personal values would impact his/her style of leadership?

CRJS 6420 Week 10 Assignment Question (20 Questions)
1. Define the following terms and explain the concept of each in your own words. You may use your text book, class notes, or other resources as a reference. (1 point each)
a. Organization
An organization is a social unit of people that is structured and managed to meet a need or to pursue collective goals. All organizations have a management structure that determines relationships between the different activities and the members, and subdivides and assigns roles, responsibilities, and authority in order to achieve their objectives.
b. Organizational behavior
Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of the way people interact within groups. Normally this study is applied in an attempt to create more effective organizations.
c. Organizational theory
Organizational theory studies how organizations are structured and how they operate. It looks at how different types of organizations are created and how they affect the people who work within them. It also looks at how organizations interact with their environment, how they change over time, and how they can be improved.
d. Organizational culture
Organizational culture is the set of shared values, beliefs, norms, and behaviors that define how employees act in an organization. It affects every aspect of an organization’s operation, from how decisions are made to how customers are treated.
e. Organizational design
Organizational design is the process of creating a structure for an organization that will best support its goals and objectives. The design process begins with an analysis of the organization’s current situation and ends with the implementation of a new structure that is tailored to the specific needs of the organization.
2. List and briefly describe the four major approaches to organizational theory.(4 points)
The four major approaches to organizational theory are classical, scientific management, human relations, and systems theory.
-Classical approach: The classical approach is based on the belief that organizations should be designed using scientific principles in order to achieve efficiency and effectiveness. This approach focuses on the formal structure of organizations and on the ways in which work can be divided into smaller tasks that can be performed more efficiently by specialized workers.
-Scientific management: The scientific management approach is based on the work of Frederick Taylor, who argued that work should be studied in order to identify the “one best way” to do it. This approach focuses on increasing efficiency by improving work methods and providing incentives for workers to increase their productivity.
-Human relations: The human relations approach is based on the work of Elton Mayo, who found that workers were more productive when they felt valued and supported by their managers. This approach emphasizes communication, cooperation, and employee involvement as key elements of successful organizations.
-Systems theory: Systems theory views organizations as complex systems made up of interacting parts that must be coordinated in order for the system to function effectively. This approach emphasizes the need for communication and coordination among all members of an organization in order to achieve its goals
