CPSY 8745 Course is a study of psychological issues related to physical health and well-being. CPSY 8745 Course Description/Goals: CPSY 8745 Course is designed to introduce students to the major theories and research methods of health psychology and how they can be used to better understand and improve human health and well-being in diverse populations including adolescents, adults, children and the elderly as well as those with chronic medical illnesses such as cancer and diabetes or other physical conditions such as obesity or pain management issues. Although the focus of this class is on theory we will also spend time discussing practical applications of these concepts with specific emphasis on psychological interventions that can be used to ameliorate some of the common problems experienced by people who have chronic illnesses or who are having difficulty adhering to prescribed treatments for a variety of physical problems. In addition we will discuss psychological reactions to illness and disability with a focus on depression and anxiety disorders as well as ways in which psychological factors influence individual health behaviors including smoking, drinking alcohol excessively or not maintaining a healthy diet or exercising regularly etc… The major goals of this class are to help students learn more about the many different theories that have been proposed to explain human behavior related to health and illness issues including how biological factors such as genetics play a role in one’s overall health status along with social factors such as poverty and racism that affect both physical and mental health in profound ways for many individuals especially those from disadvantaged groups like racial minorities or women or persons who are physically disabled etc… In addition we will discuss psychological theories about how stress affects one’s physical health status both positively (eustress) or negatively (distress) along with what can be done from a counseling perspective to help prevent some of the negative effects associated with stress especially when it leads to emotional disorders like depression or anxiety disorders that can worsen one’s physical condition if left untreated etc… Some specific topics that we will discuss in detail include how culture influences one’s beliefs about what causes diseases like AIDS (for example believing that it is God’s punishment for immoral behaviors like being gay) so that people may avoid precautions necessary for preventing HIV infection due their belief system etc… We will also talk about how negative attitudes toward obese people often lead them to be treated poorly by others which can worsen their condition if they are already depressed etc… We will also discuss how assumptions about male vs female roles may contribute to the fact that heart disease is still the leading cause of death for men while breast cancer is still the most common cause of death among women even though risk factors like diet ,smoking, lack of exercise , obesity etc.. are similar between both sexes etc… Many other topics related to different aspects of human behavior related to individual health will also be discussed throughout the semester so hopefully you should all get something out of this class no matter what your primary interests might be!

CPSY 8745 Course Project Proposal

The title of this project is “The Impact of Social Media on Health Psychology.” The purpose of this project is to investigate how social media affects the field of health psychology. The project will focus on three specific areas: (1) the impact of social media on health behavior, (2) the impact of social media on health communication, and (3) the impact of social media on health policy. In order to complete this project, the following tasks need to be completed:

1. Review the literature on social media and health psychology. This review should include a discussion of the different types of social media, their use in health psychology, and their potential impact on health behavior, communication, and policy.

Contemplation Stage: In this stage, individuals recognize that they have a problem and are considering taking action within the next six months. They are ambivalent about changing their behavior and are undecided about what they should do. People in this stage often lack confidence in their ability to make changes and are afraid of failing if they try to make changes. They might also worry about what making changes will mean for their life and whether or not they will be able to stick with the changes once they start making them. It is important for individuals in this stage to receive support and encouragement from others as well as information on how making changes can improve their lives before they can move into the preparation/action stage of change.

Preparation/Action Stage: In this stage, individuals have made a commitment to take action within the next month and are taking steps towards changing their behavior. Midterm Exam Description and Details (50 points)

The midterm exam will be administered online through the exam application in Brightspace. The exam is scheduled for Friday, October 30th at 9:00 a.m. CT and must be completed before Monday, November 2nd at 11:59 p.m. CT to avoid late penalties . It is imperative that students complete the exam during this time as this is the only time the exam will be available . Please do not schedule other commitments during this time as it is expected that all students are available to complete their exams during these timeslots . If you have other commitments which cannot be changed , please notify Dr. Hanks as soon as possible so alternate arrangements can be made prior to the start of the CPSY 8745 Course on August 24th . It is expected that all students complete the exam on their own , with no assistance from others or other sources (e.g., textbooks, notes). Any student who violates this policy will receive a score of zero on the entire exam and may face disciplinary action by Capella University based on capella’s Academic Dishonesty policy (available at https://www.capella.edu/faculty-handbook/academic-policies/academic-dishonesty/ ). Students are expected to have reviewed all content from Modules 1 – 12 prior to taking the midterm exam . Modules 1 – 12 include all assignments except for Module 13 Discussion Forums. The midterm consists of 36 multiple choice questions worth a total of 50 points . Each question is worth 1 point each . There is one bonus question worth 3 bonus points for correctly answering all three questions correctly (worth 0 points if any answer is incorrect). Multiple choice questions are taken from lecture materials, textbook readings, and assigned videos in Brightspace related to modules 1-12. All multiple choice questions must be answered through Brightspace’s Quizzing tool in Brightspace , which can be found under “Modules 13 Midterm Exam” in Brightspace’s left navigation bar (near bottom). You will have up to 90 minutes to complete the midterm examination once you start it through Brightspace’s Quizzing tool (this includes viewing instructions before beginning and submitting your answers). Any student who needs additional time due to special accommodations or technical issues should contact Dr. Hanks ASAP via email or cell phone prior to starting their exams so appropriate arrangements can be made ahead of time . Please do not wait until after you have started taking your examination because I may not be able to provide additional time once you have started taking your exam without valid documentation supporting your request for more time after starting the examination .
