COUN 6311 Course is designed to prepare students for leadership roles in schools and other educational settings. The COUN 6311 Course emphasizes knowledge and skills related to effective school leadership; advocacy for children, families, and schools; and consultation with teachers, administrators, parents, and other stakeholders. Leadership, Advocacy, and Consultation in the Schools is a required COUN 6311 Course for all students enrolled in the M.Ed. Educational Leadership program at Texas A&M University-Corpus Christi. The COUN 6311 Course is offered as an online graduate level COUN 6311 Course that meets five weeks at a time throughout each semester. These five week COUN 6311 Courses are accelerated COUN 6311 Courses and include material related to leadership, advocacy, consultation, ethical decision making and conflict management. Students will be engaged in a variety of learning activities that facilitate understanding of various issues that impact education today including cultural competence and effective communication skills. Active learning experiences will be provided via online interactions with other students and faculty during class discussions using WebCT/Blackboard software and asynchronous email correspondence. Students are required to complete weekly assignments based on the assigned readings and videos along with community visits to understand educational leadership practices in local school districts. The purpose of COUN 6311 Course is to provide students with knowledge of effective leadership practices within diverse school communities while providing opportunities to learn specific skills related to conflict management, group process, community relations, organizational leadership, problem solving and effective decision making.
The ideal candidate should hold a minimum of a master’s degree in Education Leadership or related field as well as current administrative certification at the principal level or above. Current administrative experience is also strongly encouraged so that candidates can share real-world examples with students who are interested in becoming leaders themselves. Candidates should have knowledge of current educational issues and trends impacting schools today along with previous teaching experience to share best practices with future administrators. The candidate should be able to provide examples from their own professional experience relating to conflict management within schools that illustrate various approaches that may be utilized by principals when dealing with difficult situations within the school environment such as parent confrontations or student discipline issues where parents need to be contacted regarding disciplinary consequences for their child(ren).

The purpose of COUN 6311 Course is to examine advanced topics in counseling, consultation and leadership in school settings with an emphasis on effective skills for conducting comprehensive assessments and advocating for children, families and schools. Advanced topics include evaluation of school programs, consultation strategies with teachers, parents, administrators and other agencies, advanced family counseling strategies, crisis intervention strategies and ethics. School-based consultation services can be broadly classified into two categories: direct and indirect consultation services. Direct consultation services are those in which the consultant works directly with the student, usually in a one-on-one setting. Indirect consultation services, on the other hand, are those in which the consultant provides support to teachers and other school personnel who work with the student.
What are some of the advantages and disadvantages of each type of service? (1-2 paragraphs)
Each type of service has its own advantages and disadvantages. Direct consultation services are often more effective because they allow the consultant to develop a more personal relationship with the student. However, they are also more time-consuming and expensive. Indirect consultation services, on the other hand, are less effective because the consultant is not working directly with the student. Students will be expected to utilize at least two scholarly sources in addition to the required readings for COUN 6311 Course. The final paper should be at least 8-10 pages long (double-spaced, excluding references and title page). COUN 6311 Course provides students with an overview of leadership, advocacy and consultation in the schools. The focus will be on developing a better understanding of leadership styles, consultation models and effective advocacy strategies for working with diverse school populations. Students will also have the opportunity to examine their own personal values and beliefs related to effective leadership, consultation and advocacy in the schools.

The COUN 6311 Course examines issues related to effective leadership practices for dealing with and implementing change within the context of public schools. Prerequisites: Admission to M.Ed./MSEd Program or instructor permission required. 3 credit hours earned at 2000-level or above required prior to enrollment. 3 credit hours earned in Master’s degree program required prior to enrollment. It is recommended that students complete COUN 6311 after completing the majority of their required program COUN 6311 Coursework. Students will be expected to be familiar with the field of school counseling as it relates to leadership, advocacy and consultation in order for them to effectively participate in COUN 6311. Students will review the following content areas: leadership and organizational theories, current issues in education, counseling supervision models, ethics and professional issues in counseling, research methods and statistics, consultation process, individual and group dynamics, the dynamics of organizations, models of interventions at the individual level, community resources and community planning processes. In addition to this review of content areas related to leadership, advocacy and consultation students will also have an opportunity to reflect on their own values and personal beliefs related to these topics. The class will also address how students’ values may impact their ability to function as effective leaders and advocates within educational environments.
