COMM 1099 Course Description: COMM 1099 Course is designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply their interpersonal communication skills in a variety of contexts and to develop a greater understanding of the role that interpersonal communication plays in their lives. This week I had the opportunity to practice my interpersonal communication skills in a number of different contexts. One of the most important things that I learned this week is the importance of active listening. I found that when I was really present and focused on the person that I was talking to, I was able to have more meaningful conversations. I also found that I was able to better understand the other person’s perspective and build stronger relationships. Another thing that I learned this week is the importance of nonverbal communication. I found that my body language and facial expressions can communicate a lot about how I’m feeling and what I’m thinking. This week I also practiced my assertiveness skills by saying “no” to a friend who wanted me to do something that I didn’t want to do. Overall, I found this week to be very beneficial in terms of developing my interpersonal communication skills.

What is your topic?
The topic I have chosen to explore is effective communication in relationships. In particular, I am interested in how individuals can communicate more effectively with their romantic partners. I believe that communication is a key ingredient in any successful relationship, and that couples who are able to communicate effectively are more likely to have a happy and healthy relationship.

I plan on collecting both qualitative and quantitative data. For the quantitative data, I plan on conducting a survey of individuals in relationships. The survey will ask questions about the respondent’s communication habits, as well as their satisfaction with their relationship. For the qualitative data, I plan on conducting interviews with individuals in relationships. The interviews will explore the respondent’s communication experiences and strategies in more depth.

COMM 1099 Course is a practicum in which students are placed in a community agency for 35 hours per week. The COMM 1099 Course focuses on learning and practicing interpersonal communication skills within the context of human service agencies, with particular emphasis on one-on-one work with clients. About the exam: It is 100% online, there are no in-person exams. The exam will be accessible through your MyHumber student portal. It will open at 9 am on Sunday October 20th and close at 11:59 pm that night. You will have 2 hours to complete it (unless you have approved accommodations). 1) Listening is defined as understanding communication messages clearly enough to take action (Gamble & Gamble, 2015). The authors list six factors that interfere with effective listening: noise (external and internal); language; preexisting attitudes; personality differences; emotional reactions; and information overload (Gamble & Gamble, 2015). Of these six factors, which do you think is most likely to interfere with effective listening? Why? Which factor do you think has interfered most often in past conversations? Explain why this factor has been particularly problematic for you when it comes to listening effectively during conversations. Are there any ways that you can address this issue?
2) The book identifies seven different types of noise: physical noise; psychological noise; physiological noise; semantic noise; culture/ethnicity noise; group noise; and relational noise (Gamble & Gamble, 2015). Identify one type of noise that interferes most frequently with effective communication in both professional settings and personal settings. Then describe two specific examples of situations where Noise impacted communication negatively between yourself and another person(s) – one example from a professional setting and one example from a personal setting.. Remember – these examples must be real situations experienced by yourself or observed by yourself personally – they cannot be hypothetical examples or generalizations based on an observation but not experienced personally by yourself! After describing each situation clearly – identify if there was anything which could have been done differently before or during each situation so that Noise would not have impacted effective communication between self/others! Finally – if there were things which could have been done differently before or during each situation – explain how doing things differently could have helped reduce Noise’s impact on effective communication between self/others!

The stages of the communication process are sender, message, channel, receiver, feedback, and context. I think effective communicators utilize the process by being clear about what they want to communicate, choosing an appropriate channel, making sure the receiver is able to receive the message, and providing feedback to ensure that the message was received as intended.
I experienced ineffective communication when I was trying to communicate with my partner about a disagreement we were having. I was so wrapped up in my own perspective that I wasn’t able to see how my partner was feeling or what their needs were. As a result, we just ended up yelling at each other and not really resolving anything.
If I had been more aware of the stages of the communication process, I could have approached the conversation differently. I could have started by trying to understand my partner’s perspective and then communicated my own needs in a way that was respectful and considerate of their feelings. I think being aware of the stages of the communication process can help you to be a more effective communicator in general because it allows you to be more intentional about your words and actions.
