Communication is central to the human experience and plays a vital role in the lives of individuals, communities, organizations and societies. COMM 1010 provides an introduction to communication studies, which examines how communication works in various contexts including face-to-face interactions, messages conveyed through mass media (e.g., television and film) as well as online media (e.g., social media). Students will learn about what communication is and how it can be used effectively in different environments. Communication is a two-way process, so students will also gain insights into how their own behaviours influence the effectiveness of their communications. COMM 1010 Course Project Proposal
1. Introduction
The purpose of this project is to explore the role that communication plays in our everyday lives. In particular, this project will focus on the ways in which we use communication to interact with others, and how these interactions can be both positive and negative. To do this, we will be exploring the following research question:

2. Literature Review
In order to answer the research question, we will be conducting a literature review of existing research on communication. This literature review will help us to understand the different ways in which communication can impact our lives, and how these impacts can be both positive and negative. Additionally, the literature review will help us to identify any gaps in the existing research, which can then be addressed in our own research.
3. Methodology
To answer the research question, we will be conducting our own research. This research will involve both quantitative and qualitative methods. In COMM 1010 Course, students will explore the role of communication in human interaction. ### Part 1: Communication Skills Rubric – Written/Oral Presentations/Group Interaction
#### Purpose:
The purpose of this section is for students to demonstrate their oral and written communication skills learned in COMM 1010 Course through a variety of activities. Students will be graded using a rubric that includes the following five criteria: content, organization, supporting materials, style, and delivery. Each criterion is further divided into three levels of proficiency (1=poor; 2=good; 3=excellent). This assessment includes individual written and oral presentations as well as group interaction for a total score of 100 points.
#### Instructions for How to Complete this Assignment:
The activity requires two written essays, two oral presentations, and one group assignment with reflection questions. The written essays are based on your own observations in an environment where you can observe effective or ineffective communication taking place in everyday life – workplace or family setting or other setting outside school or personal social media sites (where people engage in online discussion forums). The oral presentations are based on topic areas that you select from a list of suggested topics provided by your instructor as well as readings from Chapter 8 “Online Communication” of the textbook. For the group interaction you will work with your classmates to select a topic related to effective group interaction and discuss this topic together while completing a group reflection exercise provided by your instructor. All instructions for these activities are provided below along with templates for each activity that must be used when completing the activity so that we can accurately grade you on each specific criterion described above within each activity template. Please pay careful attention to all instructions provided since any deviations from these instructions may result in lost points on your grade for this assignment.
**Note**: The word counts indicated below are minimums not including cover page or reference page(s), if needed/required for specific assignments/templates as described below (the cover page and reference page(s) count towards the total number of pages required). Culture affects communication because it influences the way people communicate with each other. For example, in my culture, it is polite to say please and thank you when communicating with others. 3) What is the difference between verbal and nonverbal communication? Which do you think is more important in communicating with others? Why? Give an example of a time when nonverbal communication was more important than verbal communication or vice versa.
The difference between verbal and nonverbal communication is that verbal communication is using words to communicate, while nonverbal communication is using body language or facial expressions to communicate. I think nonverbal communication is more important in communicating with others because it can show how someone is feeling without them having to say anything. For example, if someone has a worried look on their face, they might not want to say anything, but their body language is showing that they are worried about something.
4) What are some of the challenges of cross-cultural communication? Give an example of a time when you experienced a challenge in communicating with someone from a different culture than yours. How did you overcome this challenge? What could you have done differently?
Some of the challenges of cross-cultural communication are that people from different cultures may have different values or beliefs which can make it difficult to communicate with each other. For example, I once had a disagreement with someone from a different culture about what was considered polite behaviour. I overcame this challenge by trying to understand where they were coming from and why they believed what they did. I could have done differently by not getting into a disagreement in the first place and trying to understand their point of view before expressing my own opinion.
5) What is “noise” in communication? What are some examples of noise that can interfere with effective communication? How can you reduce noise in your own communications?
Noise in communication is anything that interferes with the message being communicated. Some examples of noise that can interfere with effective communication are distractions, background noise, or unclear speech. You can reduce noise in your own communications by being clear and concise when speaking, and by making sure there are no distractions around you when you are trying to listen to someone else speak.
