The grade for COMM 1006 Course is determined as follows: Assignment % of Final Grade Due Date Participation 10% September 18 & October 2, 2013 Group Presentation 20% October 16, 2013 Individual Essay 40% November 13, 2013 Final Exam 30% December 4, 2013 The participation mark for COMM 1006 comprises regular class discussions and other in-class activities. You are expected to contribute to all aspects of the class and engage with your classmates. There will be a specific focus on active listening and constructive critiques. When you contribute to discussions in class, you are expected to do so intelligently and thoughtfully with an attempt to enhance the learning experience of your classmates as well as yourself. Your participation will also be evaluated on how well you meet deadlines for assignments during the semester. The group presentation assignment asks students to work together in groups of three to five students. Each group will choose one topic (from a list of possible topics) related to mass communication/mass media that has been covered in the COMM 1006 Course readings and prepare a presentation on that topic. Each presentation will last approximately 15 minutes with each member of the group contributing equally to the presentation and taking turns speaking in front of the class. Students are expected to support their ideas by referring specifically to readings and material discussed in class (citing specific examples where appropriate). The individual essay assignment asks students to complete an essay on one of two topics chosen from a list of possible topics related directly to mass communication/mass media. The essay must be at least 2 pages double spaced (500 words minimum). Essays should display thoughtful analysis based on knowledge acquired through reading/researching assigned texts and materials discussed in class (citing specific examples where appropriate). Please note that plagiarism is not tolerated; if found your work will receive a failing grade or may result in disciplinary action through Memorial University’s Code of Student Conduct & Discipline (MUNSU, 2009). Academic misconduct includes plagiarism, cheating, collusion and academic falsification. COMM 1006 Course Description: COMM 1006 Course introduces students to the field of mass communication and provides an overview of its history and development. The COMM 1006 Course emphasizes how mass communication has shaped society and vice versa. COMM 1006 Course will explore the ways in which mass communication and mass media can impact individuals and society by reinforcing or challenging existing stereotypes and norms. We will examine how messages in the media can perpetuate or challenge social inequalities based on race, gender, class, and other identity categories. We will also critically analyze media coverage of scandals, particularly those involving public figures.

**Assessment**
There are three assessments for COMM 1006 Course: a midterm exam, a final exam, and a research paper.
**Midterm Exam**
The midterm exam will cover the material from the first half of the COMM 1006 Course. It will be made up of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions.
**Final Exam**
The final exam will cover the material from the second half of the COMM 1006 Course. It will be made up of multiple choice, true/false, and short answer questions.
**Research Paper**

Croteau & Hoynes provide an excellent introduction to media/society studies and provide an overview of different theories and approaches to help you think critically about the role media play in society today. 1) Define the terms “stereotype” and “scandal.” Give an example of each. (2 marks)
A stereotype is a preconceived notion about a group of people based on their race, ethnicity, gender, etc. that is not necessarily accurate. An example of a stereotype would be the belief that all Asian people are good at math. A scandal is an event or situation that is considered morally wrong or unacceptable, and often involves allegations of illegal or improper behaviour. An example of a scandal would be the Watergate scandal in which U.S. President Richard Nixon was accused of ordering a break-in at the Democratic National Committee headquarters in order to gain an advantage in the 1972 presidential election.
2) Explain how stereotypes can lead to discrimination. (2 marks)
Stereotypes can lead to discrimination because they often involve oversimplified and inaccurate assumptions about groups of people that can result in negative attitudes and behaviours towards them. For example, the stereotype that all black people are criminals can lead to discrimination against black people in the form of racial profiling by police officers.
3) What is the difference between mass media and mass communication? (2 marks)
Mass media refers to the channels through which mass communication takes place, such as television, radio, newspapers, etc. Mass communication is the process of sharing information and messages with large numbers of people through mass media channels.
4) What are some of the ways that mass media can influence public opinion? (4 marks)
Some of the ways that mass media can influence public opinion include:
-Setting agendas: The topics that mass media outlets choose to cover can influence what issues the public sees as important or worth paying attention to.
-Framing: The way that mass media outlets present information to the public can influence how they interpret and make sense of it. For example, if a news story about a crime is framed in a way that emphasizes the race or ethnicity of the perpetrator, it could contribute to negative stereotypes about that group of people.
-Selective exposure: People tend to seek out information and messages that confirm their existing beliefs and opinions, which can reinforce any stereotypes or prejudices they may hold.
-Priming: Exposure to certain words or concepts can influence how people think about related issues even if those concepts are not directly mentioned again. For example, if someone sees a news story about an immigrant who committed a crime, they may be more likely to think of immigrants as criminals even if they don’t see any more news stories about immigrants committing crimes.

Week 1-3: Introduction and Examining Media Portrayals and Stereotypes. During these first three weeks, students will examine how media messages affect the way they think and act. In particular, we will be looking at the ways that media portrayals of race and ethnicity create stereotypes. We will also look at how the mass media affects our political beliefs.
Week 4-7: Investigating Controversial Media Events. These weeks we will investigate a series of controversial media events to see how they have been reported on, and to better understand how they have affected public opinion. We will look at cases such as the OJ Simpson trial, the Duke lacrosse scandal, and the death of Michael Jackson.
Week 8-9: Mass Media and Social Change. In these weeks we will examine how the mass media can be used to bring about social change. We will look at cases such as the civil rights movement, the women’s movement, and the gay rights movement.
Week 10-13: The Future of Mass Communication. In the final weeks of the COMM 1006 Course, we will look to the future to see how new technologies are changing the way we communicate with each other. We will also explore some of the ethical issues that come with these new technologies.
