The COMM 1003C Course will also cover the various types of mass media, including print, broadcast, and digital media. COMM 1003C Course Evaluation:

COMM 1003C Course will be evaluated through a variety of means. Each of the following components will be graded and the total points available for each section are indicated in parenthesis:
* 3 Exams (250 pts.)
* 1 Final Exam (250 pts.)
* 8 Short Essay Assignments (100 pts.)
* 2 Oral Presentations (100 pts.)
* Regular Participation/Discussion Board postings and other assignments as required (50 pts.)

Exam Format:
Each of the three exams will be multiple choice, true/false and short answer and will cover material from the lectures and readings. The final exam will cover all COMM 1003C Course material. All exams are closed book, closed notes.

Late Assignments:
Late assignments will not be accepted unless prior arrangements have been made with the instructor OR unless there are extraordinary circumstances. If an assignment is turned in late, one letter grade will be deducted for each day it is late. If an assignment is turned in more than 5 days late, it will not be accepted and a grade of zero will be assigned.

Attendance:
Regular class attendance is expected of all students. If you must miss a class, it is your responsibility to get lecture notes from another student or from the instructor before the next class period. If you miss a quiz or exam, you must make arrangements with the instructor to make up the work within one week of your return to class. If you do not make up work within that time frame, you will receive a zero for that quiz or exam.

**COMM 1003C Course Format:** COMM 1003C Course is designed to be completed entirely online. The only required material for this class is a computer with an Internet connection. No textbooks are required for this class. All of the materials necessary to successfully complete this class will be provided through the Brightspace COMM 1003C Course site (D2L). You will be expected to login to D2L each week in order to view lectures, readings, assignments, and take quizzes/exams.

**Grading Policy:** Your grade in the COMM 1003C Course will be determined by the percentage of total points that you earn during the semester. In other words, your final grade will be calculated by taking the sum total of all points that you earn and dividing it by the sum total of all possible points throughout the semester (including activities, exams, quizzes, and so on). There are no extra credit opportunities in this class. Each student starts with a “clean slate” as far as grades are concerned; your previous academic record will have no bearing on your grade in this class. **All students must complete all assignments and activities in order to pass COMM 1003C Course.** If you do not pass an exam or assignment, you may retake it one time for a higher grade. **Week 7: Media and Democracy**

This week we will discuss the role of mass media in a democracy. In addition to the readings for this week, please also watch the TED talk “Can we all be Superheroes?” by Liz Parrish (https://www.ted.com/talks/liz_parrish_can_we_all_be_superheroes) as it is relevant to our discussion of media and democracy.

We will also have a guest lecture from Dr. David Skinner on Thursday, October 25th at 3:30pm in WCC 3005 on the topic of “Media and Democracy”. Dr. Skinner is an Associate Professor in the Department of Communication Studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. His research interests include political communication, public opinion, and news media. He has published in journals such as *Political Communication*, *Journalism*, *Canadian Journal of Political Science*, and *Communication Theory*. His current research focuses on how people use social media during elections, and he has recently co-edited a book entitled *The Routledge Companion to Social Media and Politics* (with Nick Anstead and Patrick Dunleavy).

Agenda-setting theory is the idea that the news media has a lot of influence on what people think is important, even if the media does not take a stance on the issue themselves. This happens because the media decides what topics to cover, and how much attention to give them. People then use this information from the media to form their own opinions on the issue. Agenda-setting theory is important because it helps us understand how the media can influence our perceptions of reality.

Week 11 is the final week of COMM 1003C – Introduction to Mass Communication. Students will complete the last assignment and take their final exam.

COMM 1003C week 11 Assessment & Grading

Students will be asked to complete a short exam at the end of each class. These exams are typically 10-15 questions, and are based on the lecture material. The exams will be taken online through Canvas, and students will have access to their lecture notes when taking the exams. The exams will be worth 20% of the final grade for the COMM 1003C Course.

In addition, students will be asked to complete a group project. The group project will be based on a case study that will be provided to students at the beginning of the semester. Students will be asked to analyze the case study and develop a plan of action that they believe would be most effective in addressing the issues presented in the case study. The group project will be worth 30% of the final grade for the COMM 1003C Course.

Finally, students will be asked to write a research paper on a topic related to mass communication. Students will have the opportunity to choose their own topic for their research paper, and they will be given guidance on how to select an appropriate topic. The research paper will be worth 50% of the final grade for the COMM 1003C Course.

COMM 1003C Course Code: COMM 1003C Credit Hours: 5 Title: Introduction to Mass Communication COMM 1003C Course Description: COMM 1003C Course introduces the study of mass communication as a field of inquiry that addresses the ways in which individuals, groups and institutions communicate through mediated channels. COMM 1003C week 13 Assignment (20 Questions)

The final exam for COMM 1003C Course will be an essay exam consisting of 20 questions. You will be asked to answer 3 out of the 20 questions.
